From the Author. The Presence of Whales brings together some of the best contemporary writings on the great whales, creatures such as blues, and fins, which are the most immense animals ever to have lived; sleek and massive killer whales, once thought to be the sea's most vicious predators; and the mysterious belugas and narwhals/5(3).

Sharing the World of Giants contains essays inspired by being in the presence of whales, Songs from the Deep concentrates on whale vocalizations, Sightings of the Leviathan are compelling accounts of personal observations of whale behavior, Death at Sea and On Shore touch on the mystery of The presence of whales book groundings and other violent encounters, and4/5.

The Presence of Whales: Contemporary Writings on the Whale by Frank Stewart (Editor) Stewart's contemporary essays on whales blends works by marine scientists and nature writers who share both science and their personal experiences with whales.

A book review by Danny Yee © The twenty pieces collected in The Presence of Whales are by a mix of scientists and nature writers. They offer some science and plenty of descriptive information about whales, but their common theme is human interactions with whales, social and historical as well as personal.

Despite its title, this is not a book strictly about whales, but rather a hodge-podge of myriad information on almost everything related to whales, whaling, Moby Dick and its author. The structure of the book is quite intricate, with different subjects often intertwined, and the same subject sometimes scattered along different parts of the book, what I found sometimes annoying/5(61).

About the Author. Katy Payne is an acoustic biologist whose study of humpback whale songs received national attention. A frequent lecturer on conservation The presence of whales book on animal behavior and communications, she is currently a Visiting Fellow at Cornell University's Bioacoustic Research Program.

The 12th-century writer Gerald of Wales, in his Topographia Hibernica, described seeing a great Gospel Book in Kildare which many have since assumed was the Book of Kells. The description certainly matches Kells: This book contains the harmony of the Four Evangelists according to Jerome, where for almost every page there are different designs, distinguished by varied : Gospel Book.

The novel is set among a fictional tribe in the Pacific Northwest who decide to resume a whale hunt to secretly sell the meat to the Japanese. I expected this book to be about the politics of whaling in the context of 4/5. Wadi Al-Hitan (Arabic: وادي الحيتان ‎, "Valley of the Whales") is a paleontological site in the Faiyum Governorate of Egypt, some kilometres (93 mi) south-west of Cairo.

Whether it is a turtle, a whale, a fish, or a crab, the story is the same. A great sea creature raises its back out of the water.

Sea-sand and vegetation gather in on its rough back, until it looks like a small island. Sailors anchor their ship to the deceptive “island”, disembark, and light a fire.
