of the pros and cons of living in a sod house as well as the “average life of a sod house [being] six or seven years” (). Of his page book Dick dedicates a chapter to sod homes, a total of nine pages, two of which are photos.   The Appendix includes valuable census data, maps and ethnic composition charts. There are historic black and white photographs including a sod house of St. Joseph's Colony, breaking of virgin prairie sod, a hausfrau with spinning wheel, and many other photos.

The section Remembering Yesterday and Today includes: Hague Public School History; Memories of Hague Schools; Memories of Hague School Teachers; Bob's Sports Days with many team photographs; and many other memory stories. There is a listing for Hague High .   The sod house would settle significantly over time as the sod dried out. Without such a solid base, there was the risk of the walls settling inward and the entire structure would collapse. Even for the walls, they had to think “out of the box” and they decided that laying the sod bricks with the root side up would make the roots grow upward.

The book that has stuck with me all these years is “Doctor Dolittle,” by Hugh Lofting. For grown-ups: Richard Paul Evans ’ books — any or all of them — are perfect for reading aloud. The author grew up on a claim on the Nebraska frontier. She writes with affection about farm life, pioneer cooking, Sunday picnics, her heartbreak at losing her brother in World War I, the Dust Bowl days and a destructive tornado. Most important, the book is full of humorous and joyous events.

Located in the Sandhills of Cherry County, Nebraska, the settlement of DeWitty was established in by black homesteaders who constructed housing made of stacked sod.
